Indian Cumin Rice (Jeera Rice)

Ingredients
  

  • 1 Tbsp Oil neutral oil works best
  • 1 Tbsp Whole Cumin Seeds
  • 1 1/2 Cups Long-grain White Rice basmati preferred
  • 2 1/4 Cups Water
  • 1 Tbsp Butter
  • 1 tea Salt

Method
 

Rinse the Rice
  1. Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs mostly clear. The rice should look slightly translucent once properly rinsed. Drain well.
Toast the Rice
  1. In a medium pan over medium-high heat, add the oil. Once warm, add the rinsed rice and toast, stirring occasionally, until some grains begin turning lightly golden. This adds a subtle nutty flavor.
  2. Remove from heat and transfer the rice to your rice cooker.
Toast the Cumin Seeds
  1. In the same pan over medium-high heat, add the cumin seeds. Toast for 1-2 minutes, stirring frequently, until they darken slightly and become fragrant. Be careful not to burn them.
  2. Immediately add the toasted cumin seeds to the rice cooker.
Cook the Rice
  1. Add water, butter, and salt to the rice cooker. Stir gently to combine.
  2. Turn the rice cooker to the white rice setting and cook accroding to manufacture instructions.
Fluff and Serve
  1. Once cooked, let the rice rest for 5 minutes. Fluff gently with a fork and serve warm.
