The first time I tried cumin rice was at one of our favorite local Indian restaurants. It was one of those dishes that seems simple at first — just rice, right? — but the flavor completely surprised me. The warm toasted cumin, and fluffy rice… it instantly became my one of my new favorite sides.
Sadly, that sweet little local spot is closing soon, and I knew I had to try recreating that rice at home before it was gone for good. There’s something special about learning how to make a dish that reminds you of a place, a memory, or a season of life. This recipe is my way of holding onto that experience — warm, comforting, and full of flavor.
This Indian cumin rice (jeera rice) is simple but so incredibly aromatic. Toasting the rice and blooming the cumin seeds adds depth that makes it feel restaurant-quality, but it’s still easy enough for a weeknight. It pairs perfectly with butter chicken or any creamy curry and soaks up sauce beautifully without feeling heavy.

Method
- Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs mostly clear. The rice should look slightly translucent once properly rinsed. Drain well.
- In a medium pan over medium-high heat, add the oil. Once warm, add the rinsed rice and toast, stirring occasionally, until some grains begin turning lightly golden. This adds a subtle nutty flavor.
- Remove from heat and transfer the rice to your rice cooker.
- In the same pan over medium-high heat, add the cumin seeds. Toast for 1-2 minutes, stirring frequently, until they darken slightly and become fragrant. Be careful not to burn them.
- Immediately add the toasted cumin seeds to the rice cooker.
- Add water, butter, and salt to the rice cooker. Stir gently to combine.
- Turn the rice cooker to the white rice setting and cook accroding to manufacture instructions.
- Once cooked, let the rice rest for 5 minutes. Fluff gently with a fork and serve warm.
